MASTERMIND – For a decade, Anya Taylor-Joy has channeled her boundless energy into portraying women who stand strong in the face of all the world throws at them. Now, the unstoppable Argentine-British actor is gearing up for what may be her biggest year yet.

Before all that, Taylor-Joy sat down with Mastermind’s Nolan Kelly for a wide-ranging conversation on the lessons of the past decade, the measures she takes to stay sane and her ceaseless ambition. Here are five things we learned from her Mastermind 19 cover story.

1. One quality that unites the many women Taylor-Joy has portrayed on screen is their internal resolve. “[The characters] are being held back, or they’re desperately fighting against something, and I do think there’s something to be said for that. I haven’t quite figured it out yet,” she says.

2. A self-described “glutton for punishment,” Taylor-Joy wants to work with directors who will push her. “I want to be in situations where someone looks at me and says: ‘You can do better. Do it again.’ That lights a fire in my belly. I never want to be in a situation where I feel bored with myself, if that makes sense.”

3. Two instincts led her to found her production company, LadyKiller Productions: she wanted to have more of a say on set (“As a producer, you’re allowed into that problem-solving phase much earlier on, and your word holds a weight that I think I was craving); and there were books she wanted to adapt. Top of the list: How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie.

4. In order to avoid the deafening noise of social media and protect her appetite for reading, Taylor-Joy converted her iPhone into a dumb phone. “In terms of social media, I try to restrict myself to 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at lunchtime and 10 minutes around seven,” she says. Last year, she noticed a dip in her reading volume, but: “Within four days of making my phone a dumb phone, I was back to reading at my same pace.”

5. Despite all the projects she has lined up for 2026 – Apple TV’s forthcoming series Lucky; The Super Mario Galaxy Movie; and Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated third Dune  – Taylor-Joy would love to act in a Spanish-language film. “I’m waiting for the right script and the right director,” she says.
